Ranger help
okay, i need some help, and any information would be very mutch welcomed
I ONLY HAVE PROFICIES and im not buying another for $50 just for sum new skills
im trying to make a ranged char because melee is making me VERY angry.
i have a R/N and it works pretty good but i barely use the N part at all[MoP and weaken armor]
i like the idea of focusing fire on a single target because as far as i know rangers dont have alot of AoE attacks, but i like to stay behind and kill without being hit
i was thinking of either a R/W for the IAS / W/R for added protection[but less energy and regen]
[[i kinda screwed myself on the bow.. i got a green one but i customed it so now its useless if i make a new char]]
do i have to change my class at all? it fine and im just not using the right build?
or any ideas about a charicter selection, along with the builds FOR the selection?

This is a build i posted in another thread. It's prophecies only.
[skill]Escape[/skill][skill]Concussion Shot[/skill][skill]Savage Shot[/skill][skill]Distracting Shot[/skill][skill]Antidote Signet[/skill][skill]Apply Poison[/skill][skill]Troll Unguent[/skill][skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill]
Once you change your profession, then switch out [skill]Antidote Signet[/skill] with [skill]Mend Ailment[/skill]
Switch between targets to spread poison, and interrupt any pivotal skills.
Concussion Shot for the casters, of course.
Escape is one of my favorite elites. Excellent for defense and survivability.
Troll is your heal, of course.
R/Mo is the most common type of ranger for [skill]Mending Touch[/skill], which you..don't...have access to.
There's /Rit for....nvm. >__>
What is your weapon and current build anyways?

It's not the best, and the necromancer skills aren't a huge benefit.
Your attribute points are spread too thin with 4 attributes.
I'd get rid of the necromancer skills, power shot, punishing shot, and favorable winds. Rangers are meant to be a flexible profession, and it takes a whole skill bar, like yours, for it to do a decent amount of damage.
Rangers in PvE are generally condition spreaders and interrupters.
You also have no blocking stance. One of the perks of being a ranger is having one.
Longbows are usually used for pulling, and they're very inaccurate, but since you have Read the Wind, I don't think you have any problems. It's a bit of a waste to have a barbed bowstring when you can't apply bleeding. It's also not the best bow you can get.
No condition removal? You can at least bring antidote signet.
How far are you into the game btw?

To be fair only Proph doesnt really leave you much options open ^^
I would suggest going for one of the only Elites I would use from the proph campaign [skill=text]Punishing Shot[/skill]. Its a good interupt with some nice bonus damage. Although you might also want to consider [skill=text]Barrage[/skill].
The majority of Ranger bars these days carry both [skill=text]Savage Shot[/skill] and [skill=text]Distracting shot[/skill] and I would rcommend the same to you. You should also have access to [skill=text]Apply Poison[/skill] and [skill=text]Troll Unguent[/skill] which are a must on your bar (unless your bringing Barrage).
As for the Necromancer side of it you probably wont benefit too much from it. A good lot of the spells are quite expensive and most arent worth thier while. You may want to bring some form of enchantment removal such as [skill=text]Gaze of contempt[/skill] or [skill=text]Rend Enchantment[/skill]. You could try replacing your elite with [skill=text]Virulence[/skill] for more of a condition spam. Your damage output could be increased throuh [skill=text]Mark of Pain[/skill] but tbh I would try and stick to the Ranger side of things ^^
Hope this helps

R/Me is a good combo. Epidemic makes condition spreading to multiple targets very effective in PvE.

In general, yes it is. There are exceptions such as Epidemic and Mending Touch which have both been mentioned and there may be a few other skills to consider, but the secondary profession of a Ranger doesnt matter THAT much. I myself bring a couple rit skills (Flesh of my Flesh and Pure Was Mi Ling) on my ranger bar but its really down to your own style of play.

pyro, no offence but your build is njoot really what im looking for, i said i wanted to do damage not interupt all their moves, power shot and penetrating shot are better IMO because they deal more damage, witch is what im trying to do, unless they REALLY ARE the ultimate build
what about r/w for frenzy and sutch, the IAS would be usefull, but im unaware if it would be worth starting a new char /better then necro secondary for the moment [untill i get the skills mentioned]

I wouldn't bother with your Necro side my Ranger started out as a R/N from Pre. and I never used much of my Necro side maybe a well of blood or suffering but that is it.I use mostly Ranger skills in an around North Kryta where you are if you had Factions you could make up the much loved/hated TouchRanger.
I would say at this level of the game you can even get in to Beast Mastery later on forget it and start leveling your pet now.Pets are really good in the early part of the game.Don't forget to use traps and spirits where and when necessary and for conditions just use antidote signet when you get it as a R/N I did use parasite bond.I would but death nova on the henchies as well.
When you can change professions then you can think about what else you want to do after you ascend.Punishing Shot can be used in PvP and you cap it earlier than Crippling Shot.
If you really want to do damage then use a pet.For IAS use tigers furry not frenzy and most Rangers use a Hammer known as a Thumper or Bunny Thumper.

Tp be fair the damage that comesfrom Savage shot is quite nice. Not only do you get a brave amount of bonus damage if you managed to interupt the spell. But the lovely 1/2 second cast times alows you to string a Savage Shot right after a normal attack of attack skill, dealing a considerable amount of damage in a very short space of time ^_^

You could always go with the ranger stand by build, barrage/pet. Get the elite barrage, get a pet (plus pet rez), favorable winds, troll unguent, rez, lightning reflexes, and savage shot. Barrage gives a nice little damage boost, the pet does 10-15 damage every 2 seconds, favorable winds gives a nice damage boost, troll to heal, lightning reflexes to dodge attacks and increase attack speed and savage shot to interrupt the worst of spells and do some extra damage while doing so. Your attributes should be 12+1+1 marksmenship, 9+1 expertise, 9+1 wilderness survival and 3+1 beast mastery. Those can be changed up a bit to give more help to your pet (some people say that it makes your pet attack for more damage but I have never seen proof of that).

Id agree on the damage thing, Rangers arent really there for doing massive amounts of damage.
Yes they can do damage but thats not their real niche in GW, its conditions, interrupting, flexibility.
I started the same as you have, Proph only, looking for that extra damage, reading post after post. After reading enough "rangers dont do damage" posts I began to see why. Based on your progression, Poison is an absolute must. If I can rem my build from way back then, I ran poison, pentrating shot, savage, distracting, throw dirt, trolls ungent as my main skills (res sig etc optional).
Basically learn to sit back and spread conditions around the enemies whilst interrupting their casters (monks, mesmers, eles etc). With the conditions going round youll occupy their monks (so funny watching the AI try and clear your poison on 3-4 targets without doing any healing at all and so getting the whole mob killed). I am also now struggling to play any profession without major interrupts, it just kills me to sit there watching a monk casting or an ele about to drop a meteor shower and me unable to stop it like i would with my ranger.
At the end of it all im very pleased I chose a Ranger, i was dubious until I did the ascension mission in the desert and then things just seemed to start working out for me.
Good luck with it and enjoy!

Interrupting is really one of the key things that rangers do... and sometimes, its way, way, way better than doing damage. If damage is what you want, it can be more efficiently achieved by a warrior or other classes. For ranger, be in the mindset of sniper, moreso than machinegunner. You have the slowest weapon in the game, even the fastest bow (shortbow, flatbow) is slower than anything else except other bows. Its damage is okay, but not great. This specializes the ranger somewhat to take careful shots that are important and change the tide of the battle. Rangers can do alright damage, but they have the tools to be better at other things.

I will say this I am not up on beast masters as some are you might want to make separate thread on that or look around.I don't really use the BM line except for some spirits but I do at the lower level is is good for all around damage from what I hear. When it comes to hammers and IAS they don't really do this as you will need a stance for that say lighting reflexes.
You might want to take look at some hammer skills as it seems Rangers are better at using a hammer than a sword or axe.I will try and look for thread I liked on a Thumber build I liked and will post it here.here is an eg. of some skills.http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10234300
When playing full out Ranger in a group I suggest going full ranger and when you are level 20 ascended it is best to start to do interrupting and a little trapping.

Rangers CAN do a lot of damage as trappers.
The standard trap bar has 4 i believe, and what do you know? You have access to four!
[skill]Barbed Trap[/skill][skill]Flame Trap[/skill][skill]Dust Trap[/skill][skill]Spike Trap[/skill]
Unfortunately, the only good blocking stance, which a trapper will need, is [skill]Escape[/skill], which is elite.

Trapping can be a bit of a pain in the arse to be honest lol I suppose it would work in Normal Mode, not so much in Hard Mode (They'll break agro and come abuse you).
